Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater; pH range: 7; dH range: 20
Distribution:  South America: ParanĂ¡ River basin, in the Paraguay River drainage in Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay, and the ParanĂ¡ River drainage of Argentina.
Diagnosis:  Older males get a notable hump on their heads but nothing like the some Central American cichlids. This fish is not very colorful and interesting for the aquarium trade (Ref. 12251).
