This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: most or all scales cycloid; ctenoid scales (if present) restricted to mid-lateral region of caudal peduncle; 23-26 (usually 24 or 25) scales in lateral series; presence of pelvic frenum; absence of preopercular papillae row (Row 20); interorbital canal present with pair of pores B?, single pore D, and pair of pores F?
