Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range - 60 m
Distribution:  Western Indian Ocean: South Africa (Natal and Transkei, Ref. 4392) and Mozambique (Ref. 12484).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 13-13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-9; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 10-11. Color variable: reddish with yellow to orange spots or orange-yellow to brown with darker spots; sometimes with dark bars on body (Ref. 4392).
Biology:  Adults occur in rocky areas. Feed mainly on mollusks, crustaceans and sea urchins (Ref. 5374). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205).
