Comments: Common in clear and black waters of the Ilanos and upper Orinoco-Rio Negro drainages (Ref. 52916). Known from the main stem of the Orinoco in its upper and middle reaches, as well as the Rio Casiquiare; also recorded from small black or clear-water tributaries of the lower Orinoco near Rio Cuchivero (Ref. 52916). In the Ilanos, it occurs from the Capanaparo and Cinaruco rivers and Rio Aguaro and its tributaries (Ref. 52916). Also Ref. 598.

Presence of black fringe on the posterior edge of the operculum, especially on the dorsal half, that creates the appearance of a dark "collar"; scales on lateral line 140-175; and presence of single branched lateral line canals (Ref. 52916).
