Distribution: Western Pacific: Kapingamarangi Atoll, Caroline Islands. Possibly endemic of that atoll. Reports from other areas are likely misidentifications of the juvenile stages of Acanthurus pyroferus (J.E. Randall, pers. comm.), e.g. from Taiwan (Shao et al., 2008).
