Etymology: Cynolebias: Greek, kyon = dog + Greek, odous = teeth + Greek, lebias = a kind of small fish (Ref. 45335); akroa: Named for Akroá, an ethnic group belonging to the Macro-Jê linguistic trunk, that lived in the area until the 19th century (Ref. 127992).

Short description

This species can be easily distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: presence of metallic golden-green, with 11-13 large light dark vertical bars in the flank; caudal fin translucent and has no dots; fewer number of pelvic fin rays; dorsal-fin origin through base of 8th or 9th anal fin ray; higher number of anterior rostral cephalic neuromasts; and, cylindrical and elongated urogenital papilla in males (Ref. 127992).
Known only from the type locality, in temporary pools of about 1.3 m deep. Commonly found co-existing with other annual fish species of the genus Hypsolebias. Maximum length based on type specimen, to be replaced with a better reference (Ref. 127992).
