Etymology: Pteronotropis: Greek, pteron, = fin + A misnomer given by Rafinesque to shriveled specimens, with the meaning of "back keel"; from Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335).

North America: found in the Red and Ouachita River drainage lowlands of southern Arkansas, Louisiana and northeastern Texas, USA. Also found in Wolf Lake, southwest Illinois. Localized and uncommon (Ref. 5723).
Inhabits backwaters, oxbows and sluggish pools of creeks and small rivers, usually near vegetation over mud or sand (Ref. 5723).
