Vertebrae: 42 - 44. Diagnosis: Odaxothrissa mento is characterised by the presence of prepectoral scutes, the first prepectoral scute as large as the following ones lacking ascending arms; lower jaw strongly projecting, with strong canines at symphysis; 2-4 strong backward-pointing canines on each side behind outer row of premaxillary teeth; 16-19 short lower gillrakers; anal fin with 2-3 unbranched and 16-19 branched rays; and a silver stripe along flank (Ref. 188, 2849, 81269, 81631). It resembles Odaxothrissa ansorgii, which has 23-26 gillrakers, and Pellonula vorax which lacks canines in the upper jaw and has longer gillrakers (Ref. 188).
Found in rivers and streams, including the man-made Lake Volta (Ref. 188). It feeds on small fishes, including its own juveniles, and on aquatic insects (Ref. 188). Possibly migrates upstream to breed (Ref. 188).
