Etymology: Hypostomus: Greek, hypo = under + Greek, stoma = mouth (Ref. 45335).
The species Plecostomus margaritifer butantanis Ihering, 1911 is considered valid in Eschmeyer (CofF ver. Jul. 2011: Ref. 87661). It is treated here a synonym of Hypostomus margaritifer (Regan, 1908) following Weber (2003: Ref. 36817 ) and Ferraris (2007: Ref. 58032).
