North America: Hudson Bay basin in Ontario and Manitoba in Canada, and North Dakota south in Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins to Louisiana in the USA; Gulf drainages from Mobile Bay in Alabama to Neches River in Texas, USA; isolated population in San Antonio Bay drainage in Texas.
Inhabit rocky riffles of small to large rivers (Ref. 5723, 10294). Adults usually occur in deep swift riffles while young in shallow riffles and runs (Ref. 5723).
