Etymology: Notropis: A misnomer given by Rafinesque to shriveled specimens, with the meaning of "back keel"; from Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335);  oxyrhynchus: From the Greek words oxys=sharp and rynchus=snout (Ref. 79012).   More on author: Hubbs.

Inhabits sand and gravel runs of medium to large rivers but is less often found in sand or mud bottomed pools (Ref. 5723). Feeds on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates (71% of diet) detritus, plant material and sand. Batch spawner (Ref. 79012).
