Comments |
Known only from Clarence Lagoon and its tributaries, Tasmania (Ref. 7300). Common within its range. No longer present in the lower part of the Clarence River catchment (Ref. 30189). As of 1998, only six breeding populations are known to occur in the headwaters of the Clarence River (Ref. 30189). The spread of the introduction of the predatory brown trout, Salmo trutta, in the river has fragmented the distribution of this species (Ref. 30189 and 48787). However, it remains quite common within its current range, including one population that exists in sympatry with brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis. Conservation action: This species is protected under national and state legislation and collection requires a special permit (Ref. 36189). Periodic surveys have been conducted to assess the isolation of populations from brown trout (Ref. 30189). The habitats containing the two largest populations of Clarence galaxias are well reserved for nature conservation (Ref. 30189). A recovery plan has been prepared for the species (Ref. 30189, 36755). Also Ref. 44894.
Status of threat: Endangered (Ref. 48666, 51305). |
