Type locality, Amazonas, Rio Solimões, downstream from mouth of Río Purus, INPA 28376 (formerly FMNH 115489) (holotype of Sternarchorhynchus cramptoni, 29.0 cm TL, female). It is widely distributed along the mainstream of the Amazon River from the region of Iquitos in north-eastern Peru

downstream to the Rio Trombetas, a left bank tributary of the Amazon in the state of Pará, (Ref. 84053).
