Type locality of Hippocampus capensis, Knysna (Ref. 115213). Known from Knysna estuary, Keurbooms estuary, Mossel Bay and Plettenberg Bay; Svartveli Estuary, and Klein Brak (Ref. 30915). Protected by the Cape Nature Conservation Ordnance 19 (1974) and the CNC Proclamation 109 (1988) which prohibits harvest without a permit. Listed in South Africa Red Book of fishes (Ref. 30915).
