Gregarious, forms aggregations over rocky bottoms or seagrass beds (Zostera and seaweeds). Omnivorous but feeds mainly on small invertebrates (Ref. 3688). Important food fish.
Mainly gonochoric, but some are hermaphroditic protogynous (Ref. 4781).
