Indo-West Pacific: South Africa eastward through northern Australia to New Guinea, north to southern Japan. Recorded from Australia as Xanthichthys ringens (Ref. 6936).

Espinas dorsales (total): 3; Radios blandos dorsales (total): 27-30; Espinas anales 0; Radios blandos anales: 25 - 27. Cheek with 3 narrow, slightly diagonal dark-brown grooves. A longitudinal groove in front of eye. No enlarged osseous scales behind gill opening. Attains 26 cm SL.
