Etymology: Apogon: Greek, a = without + Greek pogon = chin, beard (Ref. 45335);  kautamea: Specific name is a compound adjective from the Old Rapanui language of Easter Island, ‘ku’ata’ meaning transparent and 'mea' meaning red, referring to the transparent red coloration of the species..

Espinas dorsales (total): 7; Radios blandos dorsales (total): 8-9; Espinas anales 2; Radios blandos anales: 8. This species is small, usually less than 40 mm SL, semitranslucent, red and lacking stripes or bars or black edges on scales on body sides; dorsal VI-I,8-9 (almost always I,9); anal II,8; pectoral 13-15 (almost always 14); usually a total of 16 or fewer gillrakers (rudiments included) on the first gill arch; 2 predorsal (supraneural) bones; a free edge of skin near the anterior nasal opening; 2 scales between the lateral line and the base of the third spine of the first dorsal fin (Ref. 58270).
