Etymology: Apricaphanius: Name from the Latin substantive Apricus, meaning 'shining', alluding to the many small white spots on the flanks of the male, which give them a shiny appearance.;  saourensis: The species name comes from the geographical toponym "Saoura", the name of the valley from which the type series was collected, and the only known locality with an extant population (Ref. 57144).

Short description Morfología | Morfometría

Radios blandos dorsales (total): 8-11; Radios blandos anales: 10 - 11. Body moderately elongated (Ref. 57144). Preorbital length 0.9-1.3 in eye-diameter (Ref. 57144). Dorsal fin inserted before origin of anal fin, on the same axis, with 7-8 (rarely 9) branched dorsal-fin rays (Ref. 57144). A long and narrow caudal peduncle, its length 1.7-2.0 in body least depth (Ref. 57144). Body pigmentation of live males a profusely mottled blue and silver, not forming vertical bars; females without conspicuous black spots, except a spot at the junction of the caudal peduncle and central caudal fin rays (Ref. 57144).

This species could be considered as critically endangered following IUCN criteria (Ref. 57144). Excessive ground water withdrawal for agricultural purposes, the drying of wetlands, and water pollution are, along with the introduced Gambusia, the major threats to the survival of this species (Ref. 57144).
