Etymology: Gymnotus: Greek, gymnos = naked (Ref. 45335);  choco: Named after the Chocó region on the Pacific slope of Colombia (Ref. 49716).

Espinas dorsales (total): 0; Radios blandos dorsales (total): 0; Radios blandos anales: 210 - 255. Color pattern of obliquely oriented pale-yellow bands which the band-interband margins are irregular and wavy, in which there are one to three inverted Y-shaped (divided ventrally) dark bands in the posterior portion of body (at bands 6-9 from posterior tip of tail), and in which the pale bands do not extend above the lateral line on the anterior 2/3 of body (Ref. 49716).
