Etymology: Rabaulichthys: Perhaps from Rabaul, the capital of Papua New Guinea + Greek, ichthys = fish;  suzukii: Named in honor of Keiu Suzuki, who has served as an assistant to the senior author for more than 12 years and helped collect the holotype (Ref. 45336).

Espinas dorsales (total): 10; Radios blandos dorsales (total): 16; Espinas anales 3; Radios blandos anales: 7; Vértebra: 26. Rear half of orbit with fleshy papillae; body depth 3.6-3.85 in SL; dorsal fin of male greatly elevated, the longest spine about equal to head length, 29.3% SL; fresh coloration of male magenta with obscure dark brown bars on dorsal two-thirds of body; a dark orange-red band, edged in lavender, from front of snout through eye to upper half of pectoral-fin base; dorsal fin light red; pelvic fins very dark magenta (Ref. 45336).
