Etymology: Lampanyctus: Greek, lampas, -ados = torch + Greek, nykte = night (Ref. 45335);  gibbsi: Named after the late Dr. Robert H. Gibbs, Jr. of the Smithsonian Institution, in honor of his many contributions to the understanding of open-ocean midwater ichthyology (Ref. 36121).

Rückenflossenstacheln (insgesamt): 0; Rückenflossenweichstrahlen (insgesamt): 13-15; Afterflossenstacheln 0; Afterflossenweichstrahlen: 17 - 20; Wirbelzahl: 36 - 38. 13-14 AO photophores; 7-8 tooth patches on the lower limb of the second gill arch; 36-39 lateral line organs (Ref. 36121). Pectoral fins with weak and flexible rays (Ref. 36121).
