Inhabits rocky shores where it is more abundant at gently sloping shores than at steeply sloping shores. Females, non-territorial males and subadults often found foraging in groups. Feeds on plants (Ref. 27668).
Mouth brooder with usually maternal parental care. Male defends territories. Brooding female guards fry in often not more than 0.5 m deep water, where it establishes small territories.
