Etymology: Notropis: A misnomer given by Rafinesque to shriveled specimens, with the meaning of "back keel"; from Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335); atrocaudalis: Notropis (Greek)=back keel; atro=black or dark, caudalis=tail (referring to black pigments forming a distinct spot near the caudal fin) (Ref. 79012).
