Etymology: Escualosa: Latin, squaleus, squalidus = with rough skin + Latin, alausa = a fish cited by Ausonius and Latin, halec = pickle, dealing with the Greek word hals = salt; it is also the old Saxon name for shad = "alli" ; 1591 (Ref. 45335).

Espinas dorsales (total): 0; Radios blandos dorsales (total): 13-21; Espinas anales 0; Radios blandos anales: 14 - 18. Belly strongly keeled. Separated from similar fishes in the area by the characters given under E. thoracata, from which it differs by its more slender body and narrow silver stripe along the flank (about half eye diameter).
