Oceania: Ashburton River to upper reaches of the Fortescue River, of the northwestern Australian coastal basins (Robe River, Nicholl's Spring, Millstream Station, Dale's Gorge in the Hamersley Range National Park, Ref. 5259).

Adults inhabit rocky pools and slow-flowing sections of streams. Also found congregating at the base of small waterfalls (Ref. 44894). Feed partly on small prawns and juvenile fishes (Ref. 5259, 44894), but is basically an omnivore. Eggs are guarded and fanned by the male parent (Ref. 205). Aquarium conditions: pH=7.2, H=8, 25°C water temperature, live food, egg layer, peaceful community fish, requires rock and plant cover (Ref. 6398).
