Diagnostic characters: pigment on gut; accessory or inner-shelf spines associated with preopercular spines in preflexion larvae (not present in other members of Myoxocephalus group); pectoral fin rays develop toward each other ventrally; nasal spines develop at 12-14 mm SL. Pigment: gut pattern; high number of postanal ventral melanophores (mean of 51 in preflexion, 47 in flexion). Sequence of fin development: pectorals and caudal, dorsal and anal, pelvics.
