Operculum with 2 and later with 3 series of spines, a more internal one of shorter spines and two more external ones that exhibit a long, strong spine almost in their middle. The dorsal fin starts developing very early (ca 4.0 mm); one of the first dorsal rays is very elongated, especially in the youngest postlarvae. Spinous ridge above the eye in the late stage.
