Family:  Dasyatidae (Stingrays), subfamily: Urogymninae
Max. size:  60 cm WD (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater; brackish
Distribution:  Asia: Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand (Chao Phraya, Mekong and Tapi Rivers).
Diagnosis:  Narrow white marginal band around disk; white spot anterior to spiracle and posterior to eye; ventral surface plain; spiral valve with 11-14 turns (Ref. 12693).
Biology:  Inhabits sandy bottoms in estuaries and rivers (Ref. 12693). Feeds on bottom-dwelling crustaceans and shellfish. Breeds in fresh water (Ref. 32457). Ovoviviparous (Ref. 50449). Wounds caused by the dorsal spines are extremely painful and can be fatal. Sold fresh for human consumption (Ref. 32457). Total length maybe greater than 200 cm.

Country info:  Found in estuaries and rivers of the Gulf of Thailand (Ref. 12693), Mekong River at Nong Khai (Ref. 37773) and Tapi River (Ref. 38725). Common in the Chao Phraya River (from Nontaburi to Nakhon Sawan Provinces), the Nan River (at Phichit Province), the Yom River (at Phitsanulok Province), and the Tachin River (Ref. 32457). Found year-round (Ref. 32457). Caught with hook-and-lines and sold fresh in local markets (Ref. 32457). Utilized by the aquarium trade (Ref. 32457). Museum: Chao Phrya, Nakornsawan Province, KUMF 2862 (Ref. 2091). Also Ref. 32444.
