Family:  Exocoetidae (Flyingfishes)
Max. size:  27 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  pelagic-neritic; marine; depth range 0 - 20 m, oceanodromous
Distribution:  Indo-West Pacific: East Africa (including the Mascarenes, Ref. 33390) to Hokkaido, Japan and Queensland, Australia. Reported from Samoa (Ref. 592).
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Inhabits neritic surface waters, rare in the open ocean (Ref. 30573). Capable of leaping out of the water and gliding for long distances above the surface (Ref. 3395).

Country info:  Known from northern (Tai-chung, rarely found in Shihman and Yehliu (Ref. 43538)) and southern (occasionally found in Nanwan (Ref. 43538), Hsiao-liu-chiu) Taiwan (Ref. 43515). Reported from Penghu (Ref. 43515, 55073). Also Ref. 47843.
