Family:  Sebastidae (Rockfishes, rockcods and thornyheads), subfamily: Sebastinae
Max. size:  23 cm TL (male/unsexed); max. reported age: 26 years
Environment:  demersal; marine; depth range 30 - 274 m
Distribution:  Eastern Pacific: northern Gulf of Alaska to Baja California, Mexico. Range extends to Kodiak Island (Ref. 95175).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 13-13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 13-14; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 6-7. Head spines strong - nasal, preocular, postocular, tympanic and parietal spines present, supraocular, coronal, and nuchal spines absent (Ref. 27437). Caudal truncate or slightly rounded (Ref. 6885). Light brown tinged in red, distinctly lighter below; 4 dark blotches along base of dorsal fin, dark pigment extends from back onto fin, may be vague; brownish red stripe on lateral line (Ref. 27437).
Biology:  An offshore species (Ref. 27437). Viviparous (Ref. 34817).
