Environment:  demersal; freshwater; depth range 35 - 65 m
Distribution:  Africa: Endemic to Lake Malawi. Widespread in the southern part of the lake. Also recorded from Nkhata Bay.
Diagnosis:  Diagnosis: pharyngeal bone normal (Ref. 54524). Some pharyngeal teeth enlarged (Ref. 54524, 55954). Anal fin base 22.9 (22.0-24.3)% SL (Ref. 54524). Description: short snout; terminal mouth set low on profile (Ref. 54524, 55954).
Biology:  Deep-water species (Ref. 5595, 55954). Inhabits sandy shores; feeds mainly on invertebrates but also takes diatoms (Ref. 5595).
