Family:  Myctophidae (Lanternfishes), subfamily: Lampanyctinae
Max. size:  23.7 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 60 - 1150 m, oceanodromous
Distribution:  Tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. Eastern Atlantic: disjunct distribution between 35°N-27°S and in Agulhas Water pockets (absent over the upwelling region between 17°N-9°N, east of 30°W). Western Atlantic: disjunct distribution between 42°N-10°S. Indian Ocean: between 8°N-0°. Western Central Pacific: Philippines. Considerable differences between Atlantic and Indo-Pacific material suggests that there may be more than one species involved (Ref. 36121).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 16-18; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 20-23; Vertebrae: 37-44. 14-17 AO photophores; 8-10.5 tooth patches on the lower limb of the second gill arch; 37-44 lateral line organs (Ref. 36121). Pectoral fin rays rather weak, flexible (Ref. 36121).
Biology:  Oceanic (Ref. 4066), found between 650-1,000 m during the day; between 60-225 m at night (maximum abundance (mainly juveniles) at 100 m) (Ref. 4479). Mesopelagic (Ref. 58302). Uncommon species (Ref. 36121).
