Family:  Stomiidae (Barbeled dragonfishes), subfamily: Idiacanthinae
Max. size:  33 cm TL (male/unsexed); 38 cm TL (female)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 0 - 1103 m
Distribution:  Eastern Pacific: throughout most of the tropic and temperate waters, both north and south of the equator.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 54-66; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 28-43; Vertebrae: 81-85
Biology:  Mesopelagic species (Ref. 559). Migrates to the surface at night and return to the depths at dawn. Feed mainly on small fishes and crustaceans (Ref. 4525). Oviparous, with planktonic eggs and larvae (Ref. 35926). Exhibit extreme sexual dimorphism, with larvoid males (Ref. 35926).
