Common dragonfish

Family:  Stomiidae (Barbeled dragonfishes), subfamily: Melanostomiinae
Max. size:  19 cm SL (female)
Environment:  pelagic-oceanic; marine; depth range 0 - 750 m
Distribution:  Pacific Ocean: near Hawaii (type locality, Teritu St. 710208, near Hawaii), several areas in the south central Pacific, and near the equator in the western Pacific.
Diagnosis:  Barbel without branches arising from stem; stem solidly pigmented; stem pigment extending onto terminal bulb; terminal filament absent or single and medial (Ref. 45801).
Biology:  Epi- and mesopelagic, with most caught in nets fishing above 160 m (Ref. 58302).
