Family:  Stomiidae (Barbeled dragonfishes), subfamily: Melanostomiinae
Max. size:  27.6 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine
Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: west of 15°W between the equator and 6°N, and from 13°S-17°S between 5°W and 10°W. Western Atlantic: off USA south to the equator including the Gulf of Mexico and the Antilles, and off Brazil. Also known from the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal soft rays (total): 29-29; Anal soft rays: 45-45. Barbel unadorned, oblong bulb, stem white with a series of rounded light yellowish patches (Ref. 37473).
Biology:  Mesopelagic species (Ref. 559).
