Max. size:  14 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; marine; depth range 6 - 128 m
Distribution:  Indo-Pacific: Christmas Island, Indonesia and Hawaii.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal soft rays (total): 21-23; Anal soft rays: 4-4. Description: Characterized by whitish to tan color with dark brown lateral stripe on snout and reddish lateral stripe on body; 10 caudal rays; rings 16 + 20 - 22; discontinuous superior trunk and tail ridges; inferior trunk ridge ending on anal ring; lateral trunk ridge confluent with inferior tail ridge; length of snout 1.5-1.7 in head length; depth of snout 9.3-12.6 in snout length; head length 4.6-5.3 in SL (Ref. 90102).
Biology:  Adults usually occur in caves or among rocks at depths from 6.1 to 48.8 m (Ref. 205). Observed cleaning a cardinal fish (Apogon evermanni) and a moray eel (Gymnothorax sp.). Ovoviviparous (Ref. 205). The male carries the eggs in a brood pouch which is found under the tail (Ref. 205). Solitary and secretive (Ref 90102).
