Family:  Labridae (Wrasses), subfamily: Bodianinae
Max. size:  18 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 35 - 75 m
Distribution:  Indian Ocean: Red Sea, the Gulf of Aqaba in the north to Madagascar and Mauritius in the south, east to Christmas Island.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 12-12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-10; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 12-12
Biology:  Adults inhabit rubble bottoms of steep outer reef slopes (Ref. 75973). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 12 April 2008 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
