Family:  Trichiuridae (Cutlassfishes), subfamily: Aphanopodinae
Max. size:  130 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; marine; depth range 200 - 900 m
Distribution:  North Atlantic: off Newfoundland (Canada), Bermuda, New England (USA), Middle Atlantic Ridges, Iceland, Norway, Portugal, Madeira, and Canary Islands.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 44-46; Dorsal soft rays (total): 104-109; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 93-102; Vertebrae: 153-158. Body silvery, jaws and opercle blackish. The inside of the mouth and gill cavities black.
Biology:  Found on continental slope and underwater rises. Juveniles mesopelagic.
