Comments: Type locality of the holotype of Pronothobranchius chirioi: 'Burkina Faso: Rivière Loagnolou, small stream on Mekrou River drainage, Niger River basin, on extreme north of the Atakora mountains in Parc Naturel W, 11°55'34"N, 2°11'03"E' (Ref. 95020). Known from Niger River basin (Ref. 95020).

Etymology: Pronothobranchius: Greek, pro = front of + Greek, nothos = bastard, false + Greek, brangchia = gill;  chirioi: The specific name is dedicated to the collector of the holotype Laurent Chirio, France, for his long-term contributions in terms of field investigations (Ref. 95020).

背面の脊椎 (合計): 0; 背鰭 (合計): 14-15; 肛門の骨 0; 臀鰭: 15 - 17; 脊つい: 28 - 29. Diagnosis: It is distinguished from all congeners by the following unique combination of characters: males with about 20-30 spots on flank, each having a smaller diameter than the radius of the pupil, spots on proximal portion of anal fin, pectoral fin hyaline, pelvic fin reaching anal fin, dorsal fin tip reaching centre of caudal peduncle, females without spots; dorsal fin with 14-15 rays and 30-31 scales in median lateral series (Ref. 95020).
