Comments: Recorded from the southern Hudson Bay drainage, Great Lakes drainage, and throughout much of Mississippi River basin except for northern Great Plains (Ref. 10294). Transplanted into Connecticut and Housatonic rivers in Massachusetts and Connecticut from Neuse River in North Carolina (Ref. 5723, 10294).

Etymology: Notropis: A misnomer given by Rafinesque to shriveled specimens, with the meaning of "back keel"; from Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335);  volucellus: volucellus, meaning winged or swift (Ref. 10294).

North America: St. Lawrence-Great Lakes, Hudson Bay and Mississippi River basins from Quebec in Canada and Vermont in the USA to Manitoba in Canada, and south to Gulf; from James River in Virginia to Neuse River in North Carolina, USA; from Mobile Bay in Georgia and Alabama to Nueces River in Texas, USA.

Biologie     Fachlexikon (Englisch) (z.B. epibenthic)

Inhabits sandy pools of headwaters, creeks and small to large rivers. Also occurs in quiet areas of lakes (Ref. 5723, 10294). Feeds on microcrustacea, midge larvae and pupae, and some terrestrial insects (Ref. 10294). Very similar to Notropis cahabae (Ref. 5723).
