Espinas dorsales (total): 13; Radios blandos dorsales (total): 9; Espinas anales 3; Radios blandos anales: 10 - 11. Color variable: reddish with yellow to orange spots or orange-yellow to brown with darker spots; sometimes with dark bars on body (Ref. 4392).

Adults occur in rocky areas. Feed mainly on mollusks, crustaceans and sea urchins (Ref. 5374). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205).
