Comments: Type locality of the holotype of Nothobranchius kirki: 'a pool adjacent to the Likangala River which forms part of the Lake Chilwa endoreic drainage basin, Malawi' (Ref. 96544). Known from Lake Chilwa basin (Ref. 55909, 59344, 91043, 92979, 96544, 97277, 97257, 97285, 97286, 127332) and Lake Chiuta (Ref. 46841, 55909, 59344, 91043, 92979, 97257, 97286, 127332). Also Ref. 27139.

Found in temporary swamps, pools and ditches on floodplains associated with Lake Chilwa and Lake Chiuta systems (Ref. 59344). Bottom spawner, 4 months incubation; is difficult to maintain in aquarium (Ref. 27139).
