Comments: Occurs along the Himalaya, from Jammu and Kashmir to Assam (Ref. 4832) through Sikkim (Ref. 41236). Also found in Kedar Valley (Ref. 37082) and Siwalik (Ref. 40971). Present in Nainital, Bhimtal and Naukuchiatal lakes (Ref. 89721). Also Ref. 45255.

Adults inhabit mountain streams and rivers (Ref. 41236), preferring to live among rocks (Ref. 4832). Are herbivores feeding mainly on algae, aquatic plants and detritus (Ref. 6351). Mature individuals breed during April and May (Ref. 4832). The flesh of this species is much relished (Ref. 4832).
