Comments: Known from the mouth of river Ganges and its tributaries, West Bengal coast and Hooghly estuary (Ref. 45255). Forms an important element in artisanal fisheries in the Hooghly estuary, West Bengal (Ref. 4832). Common during winter months and known for spines. Largely processed for dry-fish markets (Ref. 33273).

Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 80. Body tapering, belly rounded before pelvic fins, with 6 + 10 or 11 = 15 or 16 keeled scutes from just behind pectoral fin base to anus. Maxilla short, not reaching to edge of gill cover. Pectoral fin with 6 long filaments; the branched fin rays much shorter than those of pelvic fin.

A schooling species found in coastal waters, but also entering estuaries (although its tolerance to salinities seems not to have been recorded).
