Comments: Type locality of Barilius bonarensis, Bonar, Gharwal, Uttar Pradesh, western Himalayas, India (Ref. 81932). Known from Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Manipur, Nagaland and Orissa (Ref. 41236), and Nainital Lake (Ref. 89721). Also Ref. 4832, 45255, 89472. Status of threat: Vulnerable in Western Ghats (Ref. 50614).

Etymology: Barilius: Latinization of 'barila', presumably a Bengali local name for Barilius barila, but it lacks a proper reference (J. Müller, pers. comm., April 2021, after information from native speakers)..
