Type locality of Leporinus tristriatus from Peixoto de Azevedo, tributary of Rio Peixoto de Azevedo, at Cachoeira da Neblina, Rio Teles Pires basin, Mato Grosso, Brazil, MZUSP 96800. Also known from tributaries of the upper Rio Tocantins, upper Rio Xingu and the Rio Tapajos, including the Rio Arinos, the Rio Teles Pires and the Rio Jamanxim, in the states of Goias, Mato Grosso and Para (Ref. 128920).
