Comments: Type locality of Moenkhausia cosmops, Mato Grosso, Sapezal, córrego Vinte e Cinco de Maio, near its mouth at the Rio Papagaio. Found in the tributaries of the upper rio Sepotuba in the rio Paraguai basin and tributaries of the rio Juruena in the rio Tapajôs basin in Mato Grosso, central Brazil (Ref. 72399).

Its type locality is a clearwater, moderately fast flowing, large stream (4-5 m wide, 0.5 - 2 m deep), mainly with sandy bottom (Ref. 72399). Except one specimen taken at the main channel of the stream, all specimens were collected at backwaters, near marginal macrophytes (Ref. 72399). Forms large schools (>50 individuals) at the river bank, sheltered among dead, submerged saplings (Ref. 72399). Insects (mainly ants), vegetal matter and algae are found in the stomach contents (Ref. 72399).
