Comments: Type locality, south of Cape Everard, Victoria, CSIRO H 4447-01 (holotype of Pezichthys compressus, 4.24 cm SL). Known from off southeastern Australia, two specimens, collected from eastern Bass Strait, south of Cape Everard (37° 58'S, 149° 12'E) at 112 m depth, and south-east of Lakes Entrance (38° 33'S, 148° 24'E), Bass Strait, Victoria at ca. 220 m depth (Ref. 82446).

Etymology: Pezichthys: Name from Greek 'pezo' (walking) and 'ichthys' (fish), referring to the ability of these fishes to walk on the sea floor using their hand-like pelvic fins and arm-like pectoral fins.;  compressus: Derived from the Late Latin compressare (to press hard) in reference to its laterally flattened body shape (Ref. 82446).
