Comments: Known from the Kwango River (Kasai drainage, middle Congo River basin)(Ref. 2801, 11970). Report from the "Cuanza (Atlantic coastal)" (Ref. 120641) probably refers to the Cuanzan drainage basin or Cuanza Ichthyological Province, including various Angolan coastal basins, and not (only) the Cuanza river basin; however, Ref. 120641 does not mention the species from the Congo River basin despite its type locality. Type locality of Varicorhinus ansorgii: 'Kwango River at Fort Don Carlos' (Ref. 80289).
